The Sight And Sound Of A Highland Piper

The presence of a Highland Piper in full dress can bring a deeply personal and emotional touch to a funeral. A piper can be instructed to play at specific moments chosen by you — perhaps one significant tune at a particularly meaningful point in the service.

What Can A Piper Be Used For?

A piper can enhance your farewell in several ways:

  • Play as mourners gather

  • Lead the cortege to the place of service

  • Pipe into the service

  • Play a lament after the final words of committal

  • Pipe after the service

Tunes Your Piper Can Play

Our recommended piper, Gary Anderson (The Sussex Bagpiper), can discuss your requirements in full prior to the service.

Typical choices include:

  • Funeral laments or marches: Flowers of the Forest, Sleep, Dearie, Sleep, Lochaber No More

  • Popular tunes: Amazing Grace, Flower of Scotland, Going Home, Loch Lomond, Skye Boat Song, Mull of Kintyre, Danny Boy, Fields of Athenry

  • Traditional Highland / Gaelic tunes: The Dark Island, The Mingaulay Boat Song, Soraidh Leis an Ait (Farewell to the Land of My Birth), My Home, The Mist Covered Mountains of Home

  • Popular Scottish songs: The Rowan Tree, Auld Lang Syne, The Bluebells of Scotland

  • Modern / other options: Highland Cathedral, The Sands of Kuwait

There are many more tunes than these — if you hear of others you prefer, you are welcome to request them.
