What is a Direct Cremation service?

A 'Direct Cremation' or 'Cremation Only' service simply means that your loved one is cremated without mourners attending a funeral service at the Crematorium.

The cremation will take place as soon as the necessary paperwork is completed, at a time and date that is agreeable with you, usually about two weeks after the death.

We are able to advise you of the time and day of the cremation in order that you may organise your own private memorial service in your own home if you wish.

Why not light a candle, play some music and look at the old photos at the time of the cremation?

Alternatively you may choose to say goodbye to your loved one at our Chapel of Rest.

The coffin can be open or closed and your loved one can either be dressed in their own clothes or in one of our gowns. We have a music system if you would like to bring in CDs and listen to your loved ones favourite music in tribute to them.

No matter which funeral option is chosen, the care, attention and dignity that we give to the people in our care is always of the very highest standard.

Who has a Direct Cremation?

  • David Bowie had a direct cremation service in January 2016. The iconic singer told his loved ones he wanted to “go without any fuss” and not have a funeral service or public memorial. As the star bravely battled liver cancer over his last 18 months, he made his plans clear to his family, including wife Iman, for what he wanted to happen when the time came. The Starman singer said he only wanted to be remembered for the good times they shared and the music he made. A US source said: “In many respects you don’t need a memorial or service to remember David by...you have his music instead. He would have wanted to just disappear with no fuss, no big show, no fan-fare. This would totally be his style."

  • We recently arranged two Advance Wishes for Direct Cremation. Advance Wishes is when people arrange their funeral wishes with us in advance but who do not wish to pay for it in advance. The couple have been married over 60 years and wanted to make plans for their funerals. They rang a branch of a national company and were quoted £6000 for the two of them for their cheapest cremation. They saved £3000 by having the Direct Cremation option and the only difference will be not spending 30 minutes at a crematorium.

  • We have arranged this funeral many times for people who were very religious. Their thoughts were that by the time the funeral took place they would already be where their beliefs had promised. A funeral service would therefore make no difference.

  • We have also arranged this for many atheists who, having no belief in an afterlife, can see no point in having a funeral service. We have heard ‘just get rid of me’ on more than one occasion.

  • Sometimes parents are in a nursing home here and their children live abroad. The parent dies, the child cannot say their goodbyes and for whatever reason the children are unable or reluctant to travel back for a short service at a crematorium.

  • It is not uncommon that we arrange this funeral at the specific request of the person who is dying. We have arranged the funerals of the mother and father of a lady who, on the instructions of both parents and against her personal preference, carried out their wishes.

What our customers say

Ian R Palmer

We recently and unexpectedly lost our Dad and were confused about what options were available to us. Dad really didn't want a fuss so we needed guidance and advice which we thankfully found at Rounce Funeral Services Limited. We decided on a direct cremation which was perfect for what Dad wanted and gave us the opportunity to say our final farewell in a way which perfectly suited the family. We had never heard of a direct cremation before so we never had the opportunity to discuss it with Dad but he would've been so pleased that this option was available.

Jan and her son Chris have been attentive, professional and compassionate to us all at this very difficult time. The quality and care they have shown to us and Dad is appreciated more than we can express.

We would highly recommend Rounce to anyone that wants high quality, personal service to take care of your loved one.

After 18 wonderful years I lost my best friend and husband Roy Kenneth Whitehouse to brain cancer, I cared and nursed Roy at home throughout. Roy wanted to ensure he had what he wanted when he dropped off the twig as he always used to refer to dying, so he asked me to arrange a Direct Cremation, no fuss just let him leave which I fully supported and carried out. From the first call to Rounce right through to the final visit to collect Roy to take him home and then to Ireland and Tobago the team at Rounce were wonderful.I would like to mention in particular Tony who came to collect Roy from our home he was so respectful and gentle asking me if I would like to be involved with Roy's leaving home which I wanted to so much. Thank you to you all at Rounce. Sincerely Mark Lindsey Jones.

As I live abroad and was not able to make several visits to the UK  I wanted a quick, simple, but tasteful, service when my mother died and Rounce Funeral Services suggested a direct cremation with a small service at their funeral home. I am extremely grateful for Penny for this and for the efficient, no-fuss organisation of everything from celebrant to cremation. Thank you to all at Rounce for making this time much less stressful for me.

My Father passed away suddenly whilst on holiday in Worthing. Coupled with the shock of him dying was the complication of him being away from home as well as not knowing the area at all. I contacted a couple of Funeral Directors' including Rounce, the decision for me was easy. I spoke with Jan and she was warm and patient and understanding . Very good value fees as well. But it was the kindness, advice and overall help - fitting around my travelling to and from London and also the explanation of a Direct Cremation, which was the option we chose. I really do not hesitate to recommend Jan and the team. Thank you so very much for making a hideous time a little easier.
